Proposed model for the cell origin and transformation of liver cancer stem cells. Dysregulation of signaling pathways involved in self-renewal and proliferation of normal stem cells (hepatic progenitor cells, HPCs) is likely to cause uncontrolled proliferation and increased self-renewal capacity of HPCs, resulting in the transformation of HPCs into cancer stem cells (CSCs).
